Quick Cell Phone Ban Update

About a month ago, my team agreed not to use cell phones in meetings. Our hope was that it would improve the effectiveness of our meetings and generate more interaction. I am happy to report that we have seen an improvement. In the beginning, it was hard to leave the phone behind (my technique to avoid temptation).

Some team members have always been good about not being tethered to their phones. Those of us who are more attached had a bit of a break-in period. It didn't take long however. A few observations:

  1. After the adjustment period, people felt a sense of relief and a sense of calmness not having the phone as an appendage.
  2. You quickly realize that there aren't too many messages, phone calls, or text messages that require immediate attention.
  3. You become more effective, some people schedule time periodically during the day to handle messages making the rest of your day available for focused activities.
Good results so far. One team member even commented that it is rude to check messages while in meetings. I think he is right. For most of us, this will be a permanent change.

  2. I'm learning this in all aspects of my life. Meetings, family time, etc.

A wise person reminded me that my work will always be there waiting for me. I'm not going to do myself any favors by giving it more attention than I give to myself and the live people that are standing right in front of me.

I hope this catches on or one day in the not too distant future, we'll be texting eachother about our days at the dinner table. Please no!

  3. I was out of the office the last few days and left my cell phone off. It was really nice not to have to think about it and check messages. I will do that more often.
